The most common form of joint preservation surgery is arthroscopic. In this circumstance, a clean out of all the pain mediators in the knee may be indicated. This would involve removing irritated synovium, releasing scar tissue and contractures, removing offending bone spurs, and trying to improve a patient’s motion in both their patellofemoral joint and the tibiofemoral joint. This would especially involve patellar mobilization and trying to regain full knee extension. It is especially important to try to control knee swelling because this will cause quadriceps shutdown and atrophy, increased pain, and can limit motion. In general, the results of joint preservation surgery are very dependent upon the patient working with a physical therapist following surgery. A properly guided rehabilitation program is essential to achieve one’s maximal outcomes after this type of surgery. In fact, if a patient cannot participate in this type of therapy program, we will generally discourage an arthroscopic joint preservation surgery because we have found that in patients who do not participate in physical therapy commonly have a recurrence of stiffness, scarring, and muscle atrophy.

[/et_pb_toggle][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.9.5″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_image src=”https://drwolfson.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/joyce-mccown-IG96K_HiDk0-unsplash-scaled-e1617323578102.jpg” title_text=”joyce-mccown-IG96K_HiDk0-unsplash” _builder_version=”4.9.5″ _module_preset=”default”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_button button_url=”https://drwolfson.com/all-services/” button_text=”All Services” button_alignment=”left” _builder_version=”4.9.5″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#286AA6″ button_icon=”%%2%%” custom_margin=”-78px||||false|false”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.9.2″ _module_preset=”default”][et_pb_image src=”https://drwolfson.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Hip-Replacement-Art.png” title_text=”Hip Replacement Art” force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.9.5″ _module_preset=”default” min_height=”150px” height=”340px”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_button button_url=”https://drwolfson.com/conditions/” button_text=”Conditions” button_alignment=”right” _builder_version=”4.9.5″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#286AA6″ button_icon=”%%3%%” custom_margin=”-79px||0px||false|false”][/et_pb_button][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”3.22.2″ background_color=”rgba(12,12,12,0.37)” use_background_color_gradient=”on” background_color_gradient_start=”rgba(0,0,0,0.82)” background_color_gradient_end=”rgba(0,0,0,0.78)” background_color_gradient_direction=”93deg” background_color_gradient_overlays_image=”on” background_image=”https://drwolfson.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/doctor-explaining-explanation-2182972.jpg” custom_padding=”0px||0px|||” global_module=”174″ saved_tabs=”all”][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_cta title=”FOR QUESTIONS OR APPOINTMENTS CALL (415) 221-4400″ button_url=”/book-orthopedics-san-francisco/” button_text=”BOOK ONLINE” _builder_version=”3.22.2″ background_color=”rgba(126,190,197,0)”][/et_pb_cta][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

2300 Sutter Street, Suite 207, San Francisco, CA 94115Tel: 415-221-4400contact@drwolfson.comclick here to book an appointmentDr. Wolfson performs Joint preservation surgery in the San Francisco Bay area.
