About
Publications
Alongside his orthopedic practice in San Francisco, Dr. Nikolaj Wolfson writes and edits in the field of orthopedic trauma. He is Chief Editor of "Orthopedics in Disasters", published by Springer.
Orthopedics in Disasters
Dr. Wolfson is Chief Editor of "Orthopedics in Disasters: Orthopedic Injuries in Natural Disasters and Mass Casualty Events", published by Springer. The book addresses a subject that sits at the meeting point of orthopedic surgery and disaster response: what happens to musculoskeletal care when an earthquake, a storm or a mass casualty event overwhelms the systems that normally deliver it, and how surgeons and the organisations around them can prepare for and work in those conditions.
It is a multi-author volume, bringing together contributors from different countries and different parts of the response effort. The subject matter connects directly to Dr. Wolfson's own work in disaster response, including volunteer surgical missions following major earthquakes, and to his membership of the Disaster Orthopedic Initiative within SICOT, where he serves on the Trauma Committee.
Who the book is for
- Orthopedic and trauma surgeons who may be called on in a disaster response
- Emergency physicians, nurses and allied health professionals working in mass casualty settings
- Residents and fellows in orthopedic surgery and trauma
- Organisations planning humanitarian and disaster relief operations
- Anyone interested in how musculoskeletal care is delivered under severe constraint
Other writing and academic work
Dr. Wolfson has also contributed to the peer-reviewed literature and to other books and abstracts over the course of his career in reconstructive orthopedic surgery and orthopedic trauma, and he holds patents relating to orthopedic technology. Rather than reproduce a partial list here, a fuller record of his publications, presentations and academic appointments is maintained in his curriculum vitae. You can review it on his CV page.
Why this matters for patients
Writing and editing in a field is a different activity from practising in it, and neither substitutes for the other. What it does reflect is engagement with the wider surgical community and with how problems in a specialty are thought about beyond a single practice. Dr. Wolfson, MD, FRCSC, FACS, is board certified in the United States and Canada, and he brings that engagement into the consulting room: patients are given an explanation of what is going on and what the reasonable options are, rather than simply a recommendation.
