About
Technology Consulting
Dr. Nikolaj Wolfson advises medical device and health technology companies on orthopedic technology from the perspective of a practising surgeon in San Francisco. Enquiries are welcome at [email protected].
Advisory work for device and health technology companies
Orthopedic products are designed for an operating room and a clinic, and they succeed or fail on details that are visible mainly to the people who use them. Dr. Wolfson works with device manufacturers, health technology developers and investors who want that surgeon-side perspective brought into their thinking early, while decisions about design, indications and positioning are still open.
His involvement is deliberately practical. It is grounded in clinical practice in reconstructive orthopedic surgery, joint replacement and orthopedic trauma, in an academic and editorial background, and in a longstanding interest in orthopedic technology and its development. Dr. Wolfson is MD, FRCSC, FACS and board certified in the United States and Canada.
Areas where a surgeon's perspective is useful
- Concept and design review. How a proposed device or system would actually be used, and where it is likely to meet friction in practice.
- Clinical workflow. How a product fits the realities of the clinic, the operating room and the recovery pathway.
- Indications and use cases. Which clinical problems a technology is genuinely addressed to, and which it is not.
- Instrumentation and usability. Handling, ergonomics and the steps a surgical team has to take to use a product well.
- Surgeon and clinician education. How a technology is explained, taught and adopted.
- Technical and market diligence. Independent clinical perspective for investors and boards assessing an orthopedic technology.
How engagements work
Engagements are arranged individually and scoped in advance, ranging from a single review or advisory conversation to ongoing participation in an advisory capacity. Scope, terms, confidentiality and any disclosure obligations are agreed in writing before work begins. Dr. Wolfson does not endorse products, and advisory work is kept separate from clinical practice and from any recommendation made to a patient.
No client, product or past engagement is named on this page. Confidentiality is assumed as the starting point in this field, and prospective clients can expect the same discretion.
